The engine and power plant industry, as well as vehicle manufacturing, is a key segment of the automotive and transport industry. The sector has experienced significant changes in recent years, driven by increasing environmental requirements and technological advances. The production of modern engines and vehicles now requires compliance with stringent emission standards aimed at reducing the negative impact on the environment. One of the most important steps towards environmental protection was the introduction of the Euro 6 standard, which imposes strict limits on emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates. These substances are not only harmful to human health, but also contribute to environmental degradation. In response to these challenges, vehicle manufacturers need to use advanced emission control technologies, including effective temperature monitoring systems. Monitoring exhaust emissions in modern vehicles has become an indispensable part of vehicle design and operation. An effective measurement system makes it possible to control and optimise the combustion process, resulting in lower fuel consumption, improved engine efficiency and full compliance with current environmental standards. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, in particular, play a key role in reducing emissions by allowing the exhaust gases to cool and re-enter the combustion chamber. In this blog post, we discuss the details of our collaboration with a truck manufacturer on exhaust gas temperature (EGR) measurement. We discuss how the rugged VIBROtemp temperature sensor is helping the manufacturer meet stringent Euro 6 emission standards and improve engine performance. We will also look at the challenges posed by the growing need to protect the environment. Read on to find out how innovative technologies can help your company meet emission standards, improve engine efficiency and gain a competitive edge in the market!
Our business partner, a truck manufacturer, faced the challenge of increasingly stringent emission standards. The introduction of Euro 6, one of the most stringent emissions regulations in the European Union, required the company to implement technology to ensure their vehicles complied with the new regulations. The company's goal was to effectively monitor the temperature in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, as this is necessary to control the emission reduction process and ensure that products comply with the legal requirements.
The customer needed an advanced solution that could operate reliably under the extreme conditions of the exhaust gas recirculation cooler. The sensors had to measure temperature in a high-temperature environment. An additional challenge was the intense vibration , which could affect the accuracy of the measurements and the durability of the devices. In addition, the sensors had to be resistant to the aggressive chemicals present in diesel exhaust and to harmful external factors such as moisture, liquids and dust. All of this posed the need for the company to find reliable and durable technological solutions to meet the demands of the harsh operating environment, while ensuring precise and continuous monitoring of key operational parameters.
The VIBROtemp resistive exhaust gas temperature sensor, equipped with a protective stainless steel connector, a compact plug and a copper sealing ring, proved to be the ideal solution. This advanced sensor monitors the temperature in the EGR cooler with high precision, enabling monitoring of the efective cooling of the exhaust gas in accordance with the regulations. The cooled exhaust gas can then be reintroduced into the combustion cycle, helping to reduce emissions.
Advanced temperature monitoring of up to 550 degrees with the VIBROtemp sensor ensures compliance with the Euro 6 emissions standard, enabling trucks to operate on European Union roads without restrictions. With an IP69K rating, the sensors are extremely resistant to harsh operating conditions, including dust, moisture and high-pressure washing. This design guarantees their long-term reliability and measurement accuracy, regardless of the operating conditions.

By accurately determining the EGR temperature, the engine control unit can optimally manage the mixing of exhaust gas and fresh air supply. This advanced management improves the engine's efficiency, enabling rapid performance adjustment even under heavy load. Ultimately, this results in more efficient engine operation, which translates into improved vehicle performance as well as reduced fuel consumption.
In addition, precise temperature monitoring and appropriate management of the EGR system supports the manufacturer in meeting the stringent requirements of Euro 6. This not only ensures compliance with the regulations, but also allows optimisation of the combustion process, which is key to maintaining high performance and engine longevity. As a result, the manufacturer gains a competitive advantage in the market by offering vehicles with a lower environmental impact, while minimising operating costs for end users.
In an era of increasing environmental requirements and technological advances, truck manufacturers are faced with the need to comply with stringent emission standards. A case study demonstrating the use of VIBROtemp temperature sensors shows how precise temperature monitoring in the exhaust gas recirculation system can help meet Euro 6 standards and optimise engine performance. By using advanced technology, it is possible not only to reduce harmful emissions, but also to improve vehicle performance and reduce operating costs. Investment in state-of-the-art monitoring solutions is therefore becoming a key element in the strategy of companies wishing to remain competitive and protect the environment at the same time.
