How does temperature measurement in the battery battery coating process improve process safety? Case study

Want to improve the safety and efficiency of your battery manufacturing processes? In our latest case study, we show how precise temperature measurement can become a key element in protecting against costly product failures and damage. You'll learn how the implementation of certified measurement solutions helped KATOP not only meet strict safety standards, but also increase production reliability, which directly translated into its success in the global electromobility market. Read on to discover how your company can benefit from implementing proven technologies and fully protect its production processes with safety temperature limiters!

Why is accurate temperature control important in lithium-ion battery production?

Temperature measurement during electrode coating in lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries is an important process in manufacturing, as it directly affects the quality of the final products. Even a slight deviation from the ideal temperature can cause problems - uneven coating, damage to the electrodes and, as a result, lower capacity and battery life. What's more, overheating can not only reduce quality, but also pose a safety risk. That's why precise temperature measurement is so important - it avoids risks, ensuring that every battery comes out of production in the best possible shape.

What are the difficulties associated with temperature control during electrode coating of lithium-ion batteries? The customer's problem

KATOP approached us with the challenge of meeting the requirements of one of the largest players in the electromobility market - CATL. KATOP, a manufacturer of coating systems for lithium-ion batteries, had on its shoulders the responsibility for a key production step that determined the quality and reliability of final batteries in the electromobility industry. The process of coating electrodes, which then go into electric vehicles, required above all precise control over temperature conditions. The customer realized that even the slightest deviation from the ideal parameters could lead to damage to the electrodes, which in turn would negatively affect the performance and durability of the batteries. So the challenge was clearly defined: KATOP needed solutions that would ensure precise temperature monitoring at every stage of the coating and drying process, while meeting strict safety standards. The solutions were not only to protect the manufacturing process from failures, but also to support CATL's global ambitions to dominate the electromobility market. The customer expected the solutions we provided to be reliable, certified to international standards, and allow them to continue production at the highest level without compromising on safety and quality.

How to prevent the risk of overheating during battery coating? Our solution

To meet the challenges faced by KATOP, we proposed an advanced solution that not only monitors, but also effectively protects the entire production process. A key element of our proposal was the JUMO STB/STW safety temperature limiter and monitor, designed for the most demanding applications where functional safety is a priority.

With its full configurability, our temperature limiter was precisely tailored to the specific needs of the electrode coating and drying process. KATOP has gained the confidence that any exceedance of critical temperature parameters will be immediately caught and the system will automatically respond by interrupting the process and entering a safe operating state. A relay operating in a closed current circuit ensures that no deviation from the norm is overlooked, minimizing the risk of damage and associated losses.

In addition, the temperature monitor enables precise tracking of key temperature points in the production process. We have configured it to work perfectly with the main protection system, providing maximum protection not only for the electrodes, but also for the entire production environment, thereby increasing production safety and efficiency.

How can certified measurement solutions improve battery manufacturing safety for electromobility? Customer benefits

Our temperature monitoring solutions have brought KATOP not only productivity and safety improvements, but also full compliance with the industry's technical requirements and safety standards. By using certified SIS (Safety Instrumented System) logic sensors, KATOP was able to ensure that their production processes were monitored and protected to the highest standards, significantly reducing the risk of failures and damage. The products we have implemented meet stringent standards such as UL 60730-2-9 and DIN EN 14597 STB/STW, as well as IEC 61508 SIL 2 and SIL 3 functional safety standards, which guarantees reliability and compliance with international standards. In addition, all of our solutions have been tested by reputable certification bodies such as GL and TÜV Nord, further confirming their high quality and reliability.
