How to effectively monitor temperature in extreme conditions of rolling lines?

In steel mills and steel processing plants, every stage of production requires precise control of process parameters - and one of the key ones is temperature. On its value depends the quality of the finished product, the safety of work and the durability of machinery. Particularly demanding are rolling lines, where operating conditions - high humidity, the presence of process oils and extreme temperatures - effectively hinder the use of standard measurement solutions. Classic cable systems often prove unreliable or difficult to maintain, especially where access to infrastructure is limited. In such applications, technology is needed to provide stable, fast and accurate measurements - regardless of the operating environment. In this case study, we will show how we implemented a wireless temperature measurement system based on JUMO wTRANS sensors in a steel plant. Thanks to the integration with the cloud platform, the customer gained not only greater process reliability, but also full transparency of data in real time.

How to ensure accurate temperature measurement on rolling lines? The customer's problem

The company for which we carried out this project specializes in the production of steel products for various industries - from construction, to automotive, to power generation. One of the key stages of the technological process is high-temperature rolling of steel, which requires continuous and accurate monitoring of thermal parameters.

The plant operates several parallel rolling lines, each equipped with a separate heating furnace. The customer needed a solution that would enable:

  • stable and fast temperature measurement with an accuracy of 0.5°C,

  • system responsiveness of less than 5 seconds,

  • the independence of each measurement line,

  • no need to run cables,

  • high resistance of the devices to moisture, oil and harsh environmental conditions,

  • and the ability to send data to the cloud in real time.

Previously used cable solutions did not meet these requirements. The customer was looking for a solution that would not only ensure reliability, but also reduce service costs and increase the safety of the entire process.

How does a modern rolling line temperature measurement system work? Our solution

Effective temperature monitoring in high-temperature processes requires technology that combines precision, fault tolerance and integration flexibility. Increasingly, this means abandoning classic cable infrastructure in favor of wireless solutions - especially where installation and service are hampered by environmental conditions.

In the implemented project, we used a scalable measurement system based on JUMO wTRANS technology. Thanks to radio communication and modular architecture of the devices, it was possible to create a system that works independently on each production line, while providing central supervision and remote access to data.

The system includes:

  • 112 JUMO wTRANS wireless temperature sensors suitable for use in industrial environments;
  • 8 JUMO wTRANS receivers that locally receive sensor signals and transmit data to the master system;
  • JUMO variTRON 500 central unit, responsible for the aggregation of data from the entire plant and its visualization and analysis - locally or in the cloud (JUMO Cloud / smartWARE SCADA).

Configured in this way, the system not only meets the requirements for response time and measurement accuracy, but also reduces the investment involved in installation. Importantly, it provides full scalability and ease of upgrade - without interfering with existing infrastructure.

What have been the benefits of implementing a wireless system at the steel plant?

By using JUMO wTRANS technology, the customer gained stable and fast real-time temperature measurement, with an accuracy of 0.5°C and a response time of less than 5 seconds. The elimination of wiring simplified installation and minimized the risk of mechanical failures, while allowing easy expansion of the system without interrupting line operation.

The safety of the entire process has been increased - the system reacts immediately to irregularities, avoiding costly downtime or damage to the furnaces. Measurement data is available remotely thanks to cloud integration, and the whole system is designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation in harsh industrial environments.

Are you planning to upgrade your measurement system? If your production lines are operating under harsh conditions and classic measurement systems are failing, check out the possibilities of wireless technology. A system based on JUMO wTRANS allows you to increase reliability, simplify your infrastructure and gain full process control - also from the cloud.
