How to ensure a stable temperature in the crane cabin despite harsh working conditions? In steel mills, mines and on industrial platforms, crane operators work in high temperatures, humidity and dust, threatening both their comfort and sensitive electronics. In this case study, we show how implementing a setpoint-controlled thermostat solved the problem of temperature control in an extreme environment and brought tangible benefits to the customer. Read on to learn how effective temperature management improves comfort, protects equipment and supports large-scale production.
Working in extreme industrial environments presents a number of challenges, especially in industries such as metallurgy, oil, cement and ports. Crane operators in these sectors perform their tasks in extreme environments with high temperatures and in the presence of dust and moisture, and sometimes chemicals. In such conditions, temperature stability becomes crucial not only for the comfort of workers, but also for protecting their health and minimizing risks.
Sensitive electronic equipment, which is the heart of the entire crane, must also be protected from the effects of high temperatures. Without precise control of this variable, control systems, monitors, sensors - in a word, all key electronic components - can overheat. Consequently, this generates high repair costs and causes downtime . And this is what every company is trying to avoid. So why is temperature control so important in crane cabins? The answer is simple: it's a matter of safety, comfort and efficiency.
For a manufacturer of air conditioners for crane cabs, such as our customer, a key need is to provide reliable cooling to withstand extreme industrial conditions. These systems must maintain a stable temperature, even when operators' cabs are exposed to intense heat, humidity or pollution - in mines, steel mills or ports, for example.
The customer faced the challenge of finding a thermostat for its equipment that would meet these requirements while being simple and economical. A robust, affordable room thermostat with a limited setpoint was needed . Robustness to withstand harsh operating conditions was as important here as its easy, intuitive operation, so that operators could quickly adjust parameters as needed without risk of error.
An additional requirement was a large-scale solution that could be implemented in series. For a radiator manufacturer that operates in an OEM model and handles hundreds of orders per year, both scalability and unit cost were important. In short, the customer was looking for a way to simplify the temperature control process while minimizing the risk of overheating and equipment failure, while remaining competitively priced.
The solution that answered all the customer's needs turned out to be the JUMO heatTHERM adjustable setpoint limit thermostat. With this feature, the air conditioner manufacturer gained a device that offers full control over the temperature in crane cabins, without the risk of accidental changes by operators. As a result, the thermostat maintains a stable temperature, which not only increases working comfort, but also protects key electronic components from overheating. Crane operators can therefore work in optimal conditions, and the equipment is safe even during long, intensive operation.
The ability to easily set a setpoint limit allows the OEM to gain confidence that the temperature will not be set above a certain level. Why is this important? It eliminates the risk of tampering and ensures that settings comply with designed safety standards. This ensures that each air conditioner operates predictably without the need for constant supervision, which is of paramount importance in large-scale operating conditions.
In addition to these key features, the thermostat stands out for its robustness. The design is resistant to dust, moisture and vibration - exactly the factors that pose challenges in industrial crane cabins. Reliability in such conditions was essential for the customer, and thanks to the rugged design, the thermostat performs perfectly, regardless of the harsh environment.
JUMO heatTHERM
The use of a thermostat with adjustable setpoint limitation has brought the OEM a number of key benefits that have not only increased the efficiency of crane cabs, but also improved the comfort of their operators. The precision of the thermostat has made it possible to maintain a stable temperature, which means operators can work in safe, predictable conditions, and the delicate electronics in the cabs are protected from overheating. As a result, there are no worries about sudden downtime or equipment failures that could result from excessive temperature increases.
Comfortable working conditions translate into productivity. Operators who stay in cabs for long hours appreciate thermal comfort, and their improved well-being affects productivity. When the temperature in the cab is optimal, operators can better focus on tasks, and the operation of the entire machine becomes more efficient.
In addition to these technical benefits, the solution is also economical. The thermostat is affordable and available in bulk quantities, which is ideal for a customer that operates on a large scale. With a cost-effective serial ordering model, the OEM can effectively manage the production costs of its crane cab coolers.
What's more, the success of the first implementation resulted in a long-term cooperation. Satisfied with the results, the customer decided to introduce our thermostat as a standard equipment component for its air conditioners. He now orders several hundred units a year, and the partnership with JUMO is becoming a permanent part of his supply chain.
